THEORY OF MIND Theory of mind is the ability to recognize emotions and infer what others are thinking or intending from their voice tone, facial gestures, or behavior. Teens on the spectrum have difficulties with all of these aspects of theory of mind. They differ significantly from age-mates, and they don’t seem to grow out of these deficits. There have been several successful studies on training children on the spectrum to be more proficient in theory of mind, but so far, none have demonstrated improvement in peer relationships.

For instance, these teens are not thought to be aware of what interests their peers. However, when they are taught how to find common interests with potential friends as part of the PEERS intervention, they quickly learned how to have this conversation and learned what interests they had in common with potential friends. Easily Corrected Deficits in Understanding Others Some of the most important deficits that students on the spectrum have can be corrected with simple instructional techniques. THEORY OF MIND Theory of mind is the ability to recognize emotions and infer what others are thinking or intending from their voice tone, facial gestures, or behavior.
