He was the least experienced of the principals in the excellent company of 58 actors and actresses, among them: John Beard, Delane, Mr and Mrs Mills, Havard, Yates, Macklin, Mrs Clive, Mrs and Miss Macklin, Mrs Pritchard, Miss Young, and, of course and especially, Peg Woffington. But they already appeared to some extent as his inferiors. Some of them openly resented his sudden rise, but before the season was over they looked to him as a leader. Garrick astonished the town with his Lear, dazzled it with his Archer, but disappointed it as Millamour in Henry Fielding's wretched Wedding Day.

But Garrick certainly emerged as the spokesman for the group. Neither is it clear whether all of the actors were resolute "to set up a new company, if possible,'' as Murphy said Garrick and Macklin were, or simply wished to draw their pay and improve their conditions at Drury Lane. "An Embodied phalanx was . . drawn up against the manager, who had notice early in September, that none of the junto would act under him, if he did not accede to their terms. Fleetwood stood at bay," concluded Murphy.

Like all Lichfield youngsters of promise, Garrick enjoyed the patronage and advice of the learned and kindly Gilbert Walmesley, Registrar of the Ecclesiastical Court, who resided in the Palace of the absentee Bishop of Lichfield. The stories which are usually told concerning the precocity of notable actors are told of Garrick too, and doubtless some are true. He was said to have assembled a troupe of youngsters to perform The Recruiting Officer at the Palace, when he played Sergeant Kite to the applause of Walmesley and others.
