Volumes 3 and 4 of this monumental paintings contain complete entries for all such illustrious names as these of the Cibbers—Colley, Theophilus, and Susanna Maria—Kitty Clive, and Charlotte Charke, George Colman, the Elder, and the more youthful, William Davenant, and De Loutherboug. yet the following are also complete entries for dozens of vital secondary figures and of juvenile ones whose tales have by no means been instructed, in addition to a census (and at the very least a number of recoverable proof) for even the main inconsiderable performers and servants of the theatres.

As within the earlier volumes during this distinguished sequence, the accompanying illustrations comprise at the least one photograph of every topic for whom a portrait exists.

Sir Thomas died in 1651 and in October 1652 Dame Anne remarried, again to a friend of her former spouse: Sir William Davenant. Davenant, like Cademan before him, was a Cavalier in distress, and Dame Anne helped him to the tune of £1400, in recompense whereof Davenant married her and entered into a strange bond concerning her children in February 1654. He agreed to pay each of the boys £100 within a year and to maintain them or forfeit the £800 bond; this penalty was to be void if Sir William continued supporting the children until they received their £100 payments.

His walk up the rope consumed an hour, during which his small, muscular figure performed various acrobatic stunts on the slack rope. His descent was swift, requiring only six or seven seconds. It was also spectacular and noisy, for he fired pistols and blew a trumpet on the way down, and the friction of rope on breastplate left a plume of smoke billowing after him. During his three days at Derby he descended twice each day. In January 1740, descending from the steeple of St Mary Friars, Shrewsbury, he lost his balance, fell, and was killed.

S. Goliah in a spectacle called The Royal Naval Review of Plymouth. In the same bill appeared a younger Cabanel who must have been Rudolphe, later well known as a machinist and a theatrical architect. The elder Cabanel, who was most probably Rudolphe's father, may have toiled obscurely at Astley's and elsewhere both before and after that date, as an actor and possibly as a machinist. He surfaced in the records only once more, when in 1804 the "Messrs. Cabanell and Son" produced for Astley a fireworks display on the Thames in honor of the King's birthday.
